What is adjusted closing price and actual closing price of a stock?

Just wanted to know what is difference between actual closing price and adjusted closing price of a stock

Closing price is the price recorded at the close. For NSE or BSE its the price quoted at 3:30PM.
Adjusted closing price is the price that is quoted by the data provider after considering dividends, stock splits etc. If both close and adjusted close are same then no such events had occurred for that day. The dividend price adjustment for the stock is done usually on ex-dividend date, which is usually couple of dates earlier than record date. While calculating historical returns, usually we consider adjusted closing price to calculate the returns.
